The Giving Challenge 2020 was a 24 hour online event that only happens every other year. It allowed people in our region to come together and raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits. Our community and friends came together to help us exceed our goal! These funds will go a long way to serving our area when the new library opens.
You Were the One with The Giving Challenge 2020
Often we don’t realize we can all work to make the world a better place. In the past 12+ months we’ve taken time to ask you what you want in your new community library. You all stepped up and truly Were the One.
All your Giving Challenge 2020 donations were matched dollar for dollar up to $100 by the Patterson Foundation. This generous match was the key to reaching our goal.
Your donations send a message that you care about others and take the opportunity to make the world a better place. That is done by real people in real communities one at a time.
Our Friends group also lends support to the Braden River Library to allow our community residents to enjoy benefits from our efforts and not just when the new library opens.
Why is the Giving Challenge important to the Friends?
Lakewood Ranch residents have been requesting a community library for 25 years. Finally, Manatee County has committed to building a new one north of the Premier Sports Campus on Post Boulevard!
This will be more than just a library. It will be a community center that brings area residents from all generations together where we can learn, play, connect and contribute to the experiential and future economic growth of our area and its people.
Don’t our tax dollars cover this?
Manatee County dollars are already stretched to cover the costs of the library facility and staff salaries. Little to no funding is provided for programs. For example, the summer reading program for children is totally supported with funds from the Friends.
Equipment for the Makerspace, such as Dash the robot, sewing machines and 3-D printers and items for the Library of Things Collection (fishing rods, cake pans, musical instruments) for our new library will mostly all be sponsored by our Friends organization. Your support with the Giving Challenge will go toward these things.
